He felt his shoulders tense as he approached the yard sale. The crowd seemed to amplify the hum of nervous energy running through him. He hadn't wanted to come, but his wife insisted. He kept his hands in his pockets, fidgeting with the loose change. His gaze was constantly shifting, avoiding eye contact. Then he saw it, a tattered brown bear, its stuffing spilling out. It was a mirror of a pain he’d carefully buried, and the sight of it made his chest tighten. He felt a sudden, inexplicable anger, directed at everything and nothing.
